Thinking of changing up your look but not sure where to start? Well, trying out colour contacts can be one of the most cost-effective ways. Yes, they are relatively more cost-effective as compared to making a trip to a beauty salon or spa to get a makeover. With colour contact lens, you can also play up your look strategically by learning the right complementary makeup to go with it!

Colour contacts

Unlike glasses, your eye doctor can give you a prescription for lenses with zero power. This type of contact lens is termed as a cosmetic contact. If you are looking at how to improve eyesight and correct your vision, color contacts can still help those who are farsighted, nearsighted or have astigmatism. Depending on the look you are trying to achieve, you can choose your colour contact lenses from two different tints:

Enhancement tint – This is the most common type of colour lens. These lenses are translucent, and enhance your natural eye colour, making your eyes brighter and more intense.

Opaque tint- These coloured lenses cover the iris and thus can change the color of your eyes. If you have brown eyes and you want to have green ones, then this would be the right one for you.

Before choosing your colour contacts, be sure to visit your eye care specialist and get their recommendations, as these lenses are considered medical devices and thus require an authorised prescription and proper fitting.

Makeup for coloured contacts!

Once you have found yourself a suitable type of colour lens, you might also wonder how to best choose your eye makeup such that it compliments with your colour contacts? Remember that colour wheel you learned in art classes? Well, it comes into play when deciding on the right makeup to pair with your colored contact lenses. Generally, warm colored eyes pair well with makeup in cool tones and vice versa. For example, if you are wearing a blue contact lens, you might want to consider colours like orange, or colours similar to orange such as gold, copper or brown!

Makeup tips for wearing contacts

Exploring colour contact lens and makeup to switch up your look can be super exciting, but here is what you should know about protecting your eyes while having fun with your makeup.

1. Put in contact lenses first

Contacts can easily trap makeup between the lens and your eye. Always put your contacts in before applying makeup and use extra caution to keep makeup out of your eye.

2. Remove makeup before bed

Be sure to remove all makeup before heading to bed — especially eye makeup. When you forget to remove makeup at night, you run the chances of allowing bacteria and other chemicals from your make up into your eyes. Even the tiniest speck of eye makeup such as mascara or eyeshadow can lead to potential discomfort, and eye infections.

3. Keep it extra clean

Ensure that eye makeup applicators such as brushes and sponges are washed frequently to prevent any buildup of bacteria. Before you apply any kind of makeup or colour contacts, washing both your face and your hands thoroughly can remove most of the debris and bacteria thus reducing your risk of eye irritation or infection.

Be careful with eyeliners

What about eyeliners? Eyeliners generally do not damage your eyes, but applying too close to the eye could lead to harm. Frequent users of eyeliners may find that they experience certain eye problems such as sensitive or dry eyes. It is even more affecting for those who wear colour contact lenses, especially when eyeliner is applied on the inner lid margin. If eyeliner is continuously being applied, tiny particles can build up, leading to irritation, infection and blurred vision. If you believe that your vision has been impacted from the long-term usage of eyeliners and worry about how to improve eyesight, be sure to consult your eyecare provider or professional.
